Daniel Day Lewis- In Nine
67
What a Musical
The musical called Nine is a remake of a Fredrico Fellini film that was made back in the 60’s. Fellini also made La Dolce Vita and is known for his fabulous, picturesque, often very sexy life of the Italian culture. The movie Nine is loosely based on the real life of Fellini but it is actually a remake of a movie called 8 ½ by said director.
Daniel Day Lewis plays Guido Contini, a famous director (maestro) who has been commissioned to write a movie, and his mind seems to have a road block in it, and he seems to not be able to concentrate on the movie. He can see it in his head, and what he wants it to look like, but for some reason his real life stresses prevents him to actually finish the film.
It is apparent that Guido played by Lewis has a roving eye, and has often used his mistress’s as his muses. But he seems to have writers block now as the women in his life are causing him nothing but stress and strife, they are always begging for his attention and it leaves him drained, you see he is a married man and the stress of trying to hide his lifestyle from his wife is taking a toll. Not that his wife doesn’t know about his lifestyle, but as many woman who loves her husband, she has forgiven him, many times and thinks that he will finally change. It is apparent that she loves him very much and that is where the trouble lies. Guido is so damned charming in the movie that he basically gets whatever he wants but at this point it is draining his creativity.
The charm a Fellini movie has is that it is always set in Italy and has all the charms of a black and white Italian movie, the sexiness, the beautiful countryside and the passion that illuminated out of Fellini, was of course not as apparent in this film, but it was a close second. At times the movie was in black and white and then during the musical scenes they were brilliantly in color.
There were plenty of actress’s in this movie, Penelope Cruz, played his heartbroken mistress, Kate Hudson played a journalist for Vogue, who had a remarkable singing and dance routine that I would have never thought possible. Fergie played a prostitute that Guido knew as a child and had plenty of influence on him in his sexcapades, and she also was a great talent in this movie. Sophia Loren, looking fabulous played Guido’s dead mother who would make an appearance now and then to give him advice, which was quite touching, and Nicole Kidman had a small part in the movie, which we could’ve done without because it really didn’t offer anything to the movie. At first I wasn’t even sure who her character was in the film, but later realized that she was one of his actress lovers who had influenced him quite a bit in the past. But she is a presence in the film and has a great singing voice.
Now this is not a musical comedy, there were many serious parts to this movie, and it was basically a musical that was going on in the mind of Daniel Day Lewis’s character, he replays it in his head as he wants it to be done. He is quickly getting stressed out as the time to start the picture gets closer and closer and the paparazzi wants answers from him that he cannot answer. This movie has not received the best reviews but personally I happened to enjoy the movie and saw more of the Fellini influence in it than it is given credit for. The move was enjoyable, Daniel Day Lewis is always great no matter what he plays, and he even sings in the movie to my surprise. Just like the name of the movie I would give it a Nine.

Wow I need to watch that now, I read not very flattering reviews on this awhile back that's prob why I never really wanted to see it. But I think I'll rent it now, I love musicals. Great hub!
I have to watch this as well. Cant wait to see this .
Good hub Ladyjane.
LJ...we must have been channeling "actors" tonight because we posted hubs talking about them today! You Daniel Day Lewis
and me Richard Burton! I'm looking forward to seeing this.
Best, GPAGE
Ladyjane, an interesting hub. I had heard of Fellini and "La Dolce Vita" but not of "8 1/2." "Nine" sounds like it should be interesting, no matter what the reviews say!
Nice hub - the movie sounds very interesting ....I am making a point to see it - blessings.
Ladyjane, Very nice review and I will make a point to see it as I love musical and Daniel Day Lewis is good. Thanks/
I enjoyed the film, "Nine," immensely but I liked the original, "8 1/2" even more. Your review was excellent but I thought Daniel over-emoted in some scenes - he was just too over the top.
Each of the actresses were beautiful but the number performed by Penelope Cruz was worth the price of the film - scorching!
I haven't seen either number pic. LOL. But I should. This is along the lines I've been watching lately. Does anyonen else get in a certain movie "rut"? Anyway - this sounds interesting. Judy Dench, hm? What role? You didn't mention who played his wife but if Sophia Loren was his mother, surely Judy Dench was NOT his wife!
I've had Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor on my mind. I need to see "The Sandpiper" again, I think. Then I just found out from another hub that Elizabeth Taylor had a role in a movie version of "Jane Eyre" when she was 12.
I do like Daniel Day Lewis. He was so good in "Age of Innocence". He doesn't seem too right for an Italian role though. He's so formal!
Great review I never would have thought of watching this even though I enjoy Daniel Day Lewis' work just thought it didn't fit. Your review suggests to me I need to rent this flick - thanks for that.
LOVES me some Daniel Day-Lewis, yum. he is great in anything...
Serendipity! I just saw this movie last night- what fun to read your review today. I wonder why it was called Nine? My daughter thought it was because there were nine women in his life, but in fact there were only seven we could remember. Once again, DDL did an astonishing job; his characters only have his face in common. He is so gifted.
I loved Kate Hudson's dance- it was my favorite of all the women's solos. I think Nicole Kidman was integral to the plot, as she was his leading lady in all of his movies and revealed that even she was in love with him. I thought this continuing theme revealed his character and his plight- in the end, he wanted to win back his wife because the other relationships were insignificant compared to her. It was as if all the women were throwing themselves at him, in an attempt to be attractive. He represented power and fame which they seemed to want in their lives? I could think on this a very long time as there was much to contemplate.
It was tedious at times, so I can understand the poor reviews. For me, the end tied it all together and I was glad I had suffered through those slow moments.
I love Daniel Day Lewis - Anyone remember him from My Left Foot? Have not see this movie. Was not sure if I would like it or not. After reading your wonderful review, I am changing my mind. I will netflix it and if I don't like it, send you the bill for 2.50. Ha! Thanks so much.
I loved every bit of it the information on the movie and the introduction to the movie and previews.. love it all thank you for posting...I want to follow everything you do...BRAVO

Nice review LadyJ! I absolutely loved this film - the cast, the direction and the music and I'm sorry to have missed both the Broadway show and the original 8 1/2. Since viewing it at home I did suspect it was about Fellini and his actress/wife Giuletta Masina but never put the 8 1/2 link to it. I have to rent the Fellini film now as I've always admired both artists. Thanks! (judi dench was fab too!)
