Homosexuality and the Grace of God
73
I am writing this hub because I see so many different hubs on here with so many different views and ideas, and I understand people’s rights to voice their opinions and I would fight for their right to do it. But it also amazes me by a lot of the ignorance that spews out of some people about the subject of discrimination; i.e. homosexuality, race.
I am not a religious person, but I am a spiritual person. I believe in God and that he is loving, understanding, tolerant, and patient, not to mention forgiving and compassionate and the adjectives go on and on. The thing that makes me upset is time and time again I read about the people who are calling themselves disciples of God, quoting Jesus word for word and actually having the opposite attitude that Jesus did.
I grew up in a Hispanic family and environment. To look at me you wouldn’t be able to tell that I was Hispanic because my mother and my father both descended from Spaniards, therefore, my father had very light skin and very light blue eyes. My mother has translucent skin and very beautiful hazel eyes, ergo, most of my sisters and I have light hair and light skin and have dealt with many prejudices because of this. It seems when we were in school we got comments all the time from our fellow Hispanics, that we were not real Mexicans, that we must be mixed with some white shit, their words not mine.
I also recall a time when I went to my best friends house for the first time, her name was Ann Marie, she had a pool in her backyard and asked me if I wanted to go swimming. When her mother found out she said right in front of me, “ Ann Marie, your little friend cannot go swimming with you because she is Mexican and so she must have lice. I cried all the way home and that embarrassment still haunts me.
Judge not lest ye be judged
So now that I am grown up I have to deal with the discrimination that follows my son around. If you read my other hub, “Raising a son that Happens to be Gay“, then you would know some of what we have gone through. But things just seem to get worse for my son as he was again discriminated against again, one for being gay, and two for being Hispanic, a double phobic whammy.
He works with the Air Force, he is a private contractor and goes to different bases all over the country, right now he is in South Dakota and he has experienced much discrimination there. Very recently, he went to a coffee shop and was setting up his laptop so he could do some work before he ordered what he wanted. I guess the owner asked him if he was going to order something, he said yes as soon as he gets organized. The owner proceeded to tell him that he should either order something or get out because he didn’t need a NANCY Indian not buying anything and using up all his wifi. My son proceeded to get very upset and he isn’t the sort to pick a fight or to even confront people because he hates that sort of thing, but this day he did and started telling the owner where he should go and by the way he would never be back to that establishment again, my son looked around and all the people in the coffee shop were just looking at him like he was the one that was the weird one. While he was getting his stuff to leave, the owner kept at him to get out and words were exchanged and he actually picked up my sons laptop and threw it on the floor and shattered it. Someone called the police and even the police took my son aside and told him that there were still a lot of racism in these here parts. My son called me and was devastated. This is what hurts me so much for my son. That there are so many ignorant people out there that are not only mean but also encourage others to be mean to people like my son in the name of God, Church whatever. Needless to say my son pressed charges and the guy paid for my sons laptop.
God made 'Adam and Eve' not 'Adam and Steve'?...hmmmm...then who made 'Steve'?"
My son and I have been through a lot together and we still have the attitude that we do not throw judgments at people for the way that they live or the color of their skin. I consider myself to be a nice person and hate confrontations as well but I had to mention it here because some people just do not get it.
I have realized that there are a lot of hubbers out there that are spewing a lot of religious nonsense about sexuality amongst other things. It amazes me that the God that they keep referring to is someone that loves people unconditionally but the people who are speaking for God do not love people unconditionally and they have so much hatred in their hearts for people who are different from them.
When I started writing on hub pages I told myself that I wouldn’t get into it with people like this and would keep my opinions to myself. So far I have commented on a couple of hubs that have made me see blood red. And I have sunk to their level, but no more. I am going to stay on this side of the fence, with all the evil people who feel the same way as I do, its a lot nicer over here. And a word to the wise, to those hubbers out there, and you know who you are, Wake UP!! It is the year 2010 come out of your caves already.
Well I have said my peace and that is the last I am going to say on that subject. If someone cares to comment in a negative way on my hub you are so welcome to it, but you may not get the nice reply that my other readers do, in fact I may just ignore you.
Famouse Quotes
"We struggled against apartheid because we were being blamed and made to suffer for something we could do nothing about. It is the same with homosexuality. The orientation is a given, not a matter of choice. It would be crazy for someone to choose to be gay, given the homophobia that is present."
Desmond Tutu:
"...secular journalists ... tend to accept uncritically the oft-repeated Evangelical Protestant and Conservative Roman Catholic definitions that the Bible is anti-gay. If these people were honest, they would have to admit that the Bible is also pro-slavery and anti-women."
John Shelby Spong

Thanks for this Hub. Compassion and understanding do seem to be in rather short supply in some quarters. I just wish people would look past the labels and see the human being whose existence is being blanked out by the label. There is a human person behind such labels as "gay" and it is a dreadful thing to think that the label is the reality. That is what makes it possible for soldiers and murderers to kill, not to mention executioners.
In South Africa we have had a belly-ful, so to speak, of hate and violence perpetrated against labels. These have included blacks, whites, gays, lesbians, non-Christians, and the list goes on and on. We are so fortunate to have a public figure, a man of deep compassion and love, who is prepared to speak out on these issues. Desmond Tutu has bravely spoken to all, the powerful and the powerless, the message of humility and compassion, the message of love and peace and acceptance.
Thanks for sharing your story so beautifully.
Love and peace
Tony
Thank you for this gut-honest sharing.
"The thing that makes me upset is time and time again I read about the people who are calling themselves disciples of God, quoting Jesus word for word and actually having the opposite attitude that Jesus did."
IMHO, you've isolated the problem in the above sentence. I'd note for you that the people Jesus routinely took to task where those who could quote the Old Testament word for word but missed the point about justice, mercy & grace.
Quite frankly, God's grace scares those who have their "religion" all figured out...or at least think they do.
Peace, encouragement & much grace to you & your son.
LJ ya know I loves ya no matter if yer a 40 stone chick from the Amazon jungle with a limp and have a gay son and lesbian daughter. Tis what lies within the heart and yers is pure gold and my guess is so is yer sons. All I know is I loves ya to bits and always will, take a big hug ok xox
It's definitely not easy, but I pray your son comes out strong and that he doesn't give up on faith.
This was so passionately written, and I most definitely understand about the discrimination part.Although I have discovered that the younger generation are no longer as homophobic and this is a huge step forward.
Your son is lucky to have you!
PERFECT HUB!!!
What is writing without passion?!
What good does it do anyone to read that which is not the truth, or that which is written with fear?
HA! I stopped being embarrassed two and a half years ago.
I want meat and potatoes in my reading... not salad and bread crumbs!! Those that understand and appreciate come. Those that don't well, they're still reading Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys. Although I must confess as a girl I once read both. haha
Keep that passion coming! ;0
I knew this hub was coming. :)
I've always found "interesting" how someone can be racist with Native Americans, if I've studied history well they inhabited the place first so how can someone be racist with the landlord is something I hardly understand. It's like being racist with South America Indians in Amazon.
Anyway racism has been and still is common around the world, be it for physical appearance or religious matters or something else it exists also between similar people, like Hutu and Tutsi for example.
I think that people should be judged only for their behaviour, that is if they harm others or not, or if they respect others' rights or not, and not accordingly to religion, skin colour, sex or whatever.
As an example the greatest part of Gypsies live on the shoulders of others, well, this is common also to many politicians, but even between them there are some good persons, but I must admit that they usually are exiled. Anyhow a tag isn't a sufficient reason to treat bad others, or worse as it happens to kill them.
Ladyjane you already know my position about fundamentalists, sex etc. so I won't repeat myself :) and I'm happy to say that you expressed pretty well your point. Your son is lucky having a mum like you.
We are all citizens of this planet, and tolerance should be applied as much as possible. There is always time if necessary to use fists.
I disagree with homosexual. As a religious person we created by God as a couple. Between man and woman. I know this is modern era, the social development increasing than the past. I think many people have a different style, culture and society. But it back to us. Each person have different way. And I don;t want to judge. But better life in the god way and the straight line. I rate this hub!
I am so pleased you wrote this hub. I have many gay friends and I worked with wonderful gay people for seventeen years. A recent hub vilifying such great human beings who were born that way truly upset me. All that quoting their beliefs against people who can't defend themselves is very sad.
Hi ladyjane, may I say that prasetio has given a perfect example of civil disagreement? The one that makes debates worth doing? Great prasetio, people can disagree yet can talk easily about different points of view. That's why discussing intelligently is always enriching. :)
I guess many people would like to have a mother bear like you. :)
ladyjane1, I'm glad you wrote this hub. While I disagree with the homosexual life style, as a Christian it is not our job to chase any individual away. In truth we are to take them in and show them the teachings and let them as we have the gift of free will given by the father and I gladly accept them into the fold regardless of what it is. Registered sex offenders are given more slack, these folks that would attack children. It makes no sense, but I will stand by my yes and accept these people and hope they see and choose the way to the father is through the son. Also one sin is not greater than another, a strait person who habitually gets drunk every night is no better than any other.
Great hub may peace be with you.
LadyJane: It's because it's easy to be self-righteous about a sin you'll never commit. This is why I've noticed a lot of self-righteous Christian men obsess over homosexuality and abortion - wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that they're straight men, would it? :-)
Good Hub!!!!
In the free world everyone had the choice to choose whatever he wants. There should be no hindrance. I am against any kind of ban. This hub will definitely create awareness regarding homosexuality.
Keep on Hubbing
A lovely hub. It's not what people are, but how they treat eachother that matters. There is not enough love in this world.
Yes,God does love your son. If my son were gay, I would also love and accept him, no matter what. God is loving kind and compassionate, unlike many Christians! Opps, did I say that?
Well, God is all loving and understanding but to ask who made Steve? Well thats an easy one to answer, just like when the devil tempted Eve to bite the apple he could also tempt the mind of man to think and act in ways not representing of Gods will. Now, dont get me wrong I do not hate homosexuals but I dont agree with their life style and the way its pushed upon us. I think that we are equal and I'm not one to judge b/c I am not the alpha/omega. Romans 1:26-27 - "Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion."
Again, its possible that the devil had a playing it thats all. He tricked Eve and could certainly trick us. By the way its funny how some people consider gay to be a race lol, I like the guy that compared this to Natives. lol.
Ladyjane1: Excellent hub. You have focused on the FACT that God does not intend for us to beat up on each other, NOR use the Bible as the stick. Look at how Jesus accepted so many of society's outcasts: the Gerasene who lived in the cemetery; the woman with a flow of blood for twelve years regarded as unclean/unacceptable; even Lazarus who was dead and unclean; lepers; blind people; persons of 'other races' who were mixed blood (Samaritans); etc.
I suggest reading some Robert Farrar Capon, Spong, Ruth Bell Graham on grace, Anne Lamott, etc.
We are asked to be gracious, generous, inclusive, non-judgmental, caring, supportive.... We don't need more judges or condemners.
Remember the question of whether the farmer should cut down the wheat because there were were weeds in the field? Jesus basically says, "Let it be." Whatever needs separating can be done by God. We are to keep our fingers out of it. Rather feed and water the whole field for the good that shall come of it. Hmmm. When will we get it?
I look forward to your thoughts.
I don't get why people discriminate in the name of God. He befriended those society turned their backs on.
I mean in slavery days they used the Bible to justify slavery, but then denied slaves the chance of learning to read and owning Bibles because it went against it.
I try my best not to get into any battles atheists v believers, straight v gay, black v white. We should all just get along. PERIOD.
Whether homosexuality is wrong or not...we're all liable to commit sin regardless of who we choose to shag/fall in love with.
We're all humans after all. Gorgeous hub...rating you up my love!
Greetings to all.. :0).. and it is indeed written That God hates Homosexuals, but one only need realize that he hates them in the same manner as we, that is to say we hate that they turned out that way, but love them just the same.. are we not made in God's image ?? Indeed we are therefore we hate the sin , but love the sinner none the less for to sin in one point is to sin is all points, It's wrong to single out one thing and wrongly define how our Father views it.. Remember , God is a Parent, therefore think as parents and we will be just fine with one another .. Peace to all. God judges by the heart, and we will do good to do the same..
"The thing that makes me upset is time and time again I read about the people who are calling themselves disciples of God, quoting Jesus word for word and actually having the opposite attitude that Jesus did."
Hear, hear! Well done ladyjane on a great hub that everyone should read')
Well lady
I liked 50 caliburs comment
it holds true to what I feel
I will put out something personal about my self that even my family does not know
I am a christian but I suffer with "sex" problems
even though in this day my problems are flaunted on every show and most movies I would never hurt anyone or force myself on anyone, but I deal with my minds own lustful thoughts always. I hate feeling that way
Was I born with this feeling?? I dont know
my thoughts on nature vs nurture well I will keep them out of you forum
we are (as christians) not to tolerate the sin but love the sinner
I know that I am a christian but my sins haunt me always society would tell me to embrace who I am
I won't and if I did would I become someone else?
So, now you think of me as big hypocrite perverted christian that should not judge a gay guy
I said this to let you know I can almost feel were your son comes from
Other (and it is a big other) I am socially excepted and not a minority
Good hub
Keep it up
love ya
Some day - probably in the next phase of existence - we will all understand - and accept - God's ways.
wow i didnt know you were hispanic to! thats so cool. nice hub by the way. you already know how i feel about homosexuality itself but that doesnt mean we should discriminate or take priviledges away from them! thats why i have several friends who at this current time label themselves as gay or bi-sexual, I hate the sin so much, but i try never to hate the sinner. i think thats what a lot of people need to learn, cuzz they dont need all that other hateful mess
Hi,
I worship the God of Creation, the God of Revelation & the God of Salvation!
YOU DON'T!
You worship the god of your own imagination, the god of tour own thoughts, the god of your own "spirituality"!
The demons are spirit, big deal!
When one watches SODOMITES march in their GAY PARADES, I see FAGGOTS for the Eternal Fires of Hell!
These PERVERTS defy the God of Creation, the God of Revelation & the God of Salvation & will spend ETERNITY with the god of this world - Satan!
OK? You got that?
1 Corinthians 6:9-11
Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)
9-10 Surely you know that people who do wrong will not get to enjoy God’s kingdom. Don’t be fooled. These are the people who will not get to enjoy his kingdom: those who sin sexually, those who worship idols, those who commit adultery, men who let other men use them for sex or who have sex with other men, those who steal, those who are greedy, those who drink too much, those who abuse others with insults, and those who cheat. 11 In the past some of you were like that. But you were washed clean, you were made holy, and you were made right with God in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Driving up a One Way Street is against the Law!
The Anus is a "One Way Street"!
OK?
So its vulgar to describe Sodomy?
I would think what Sodomites do is Vulgar!
Which part of God's Word do you not understand?

Oh yeah! And that includes Lesbians, Pedophiles, Adulterers etc.
Don't blame the messenger, just read the Message!
When you consider the genital tuber of a fetus at nine weeks is still without gender, it’s easy to understand how the wiring might become crossed. I have friends that still believe that sexual orientation is a matter of choice. People who are born with cerebral functions, which are contrary in gender to their physical body, do indeed suffer from the ignorance of others. Your son was fortunate to have your love, support, and acceptance, so that he could mature without the fear of rejection at home. It is appropriate that you use ladyjane1 as your name, because you are number one in my opinion.

Beautiful and compassionate Hub. All gay children should have mothers as understanding and loving as you.
