The Best Shopping Center in Kansas City, Missouri- The Country Plaza
82
The first time I walked through the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri, the song “I’m Going to Kansas City”, kept going through my mind. The Plaza in the downtown district of Kansas City is a beautiful showcase of wonderful European style statues, beautiful landscapes, dozens of wonderful restaurants and so many shops to choose from, as well as spas, salons, bookstores, and jewelry stores. You can even find the best chocolatiers in the Country.
The Plaza takes up 15 city blocks and it is a must see. You can spend the whole day just walking along the city sidewalks enjoying the atmosphere and enjoying the sculptures that adorn the city streets.
The Plaza was constructed in 1922 by J.C. Nichols, who wanted to transform a swampy piece of land into the country’s first shopping center, and his hard work resulted in the beautiful plaza. Statues were brought over from Europe, and designed to give a look of Spanish and Greek decor. On the courtyard stands an original bronze of Pomona by Donatello Gabrielli,a statue of Sir Winston Churchill, there is also an impressive statue of Neptune in the center square. It is a pleasant surprise to see these works of art right here in Kansas City.
At any day of the week you can see many tourists and locals hanging out at the Plaza, as there is many things to do and places to see. The whole Plaza has a very quaint atmosphere about it, and the stores there cater to many different clients, from the average priced to the high priced stores, there is something for everyone.
The Plaza is a very lively place, and has great summer concerts in the courtyards, and is beautifully decorated during the holiday season with the famous Plaza Lights.

Plaza Lights
Every year the Plaza has their annual Plaza Lights show on Thanksgiving night. The Plaza Lightening Ceremony stage is located at Wyonette and Nicholas Road. You can imagine the whole shopping square covered in lights, it brightens up the night sky and gives the place an old fashioned feel, especially in the brisk autumn night. Many people come out from all over Missouri to watch this spectacular event.
The Plaza lights will shine starting Nov 25, 2010 through Jan 16,2011.
Plaza Lights Ceremony
Horse and Carriage Rides
During the Autumn season the horse and carriage rides are quite popular, and you can take a ride around the Plaza and view all the beautiful sights. It is especially nice during the evening hours because there are so many lights, and the carriages are covered in lights as well. You might really have to cover up however because the Missouri fall evenings are pretty cool. But its a good opportunty to cuddle up with your honey and take in the sights, I think that this is a very romantic carriage ride and lots of fun for kids as well.
Carriage and Gondola Rides
Not only does the Plaza offer carriage rides but they also offer gondola rides, another romantic means of transportation. You can also book a gondola at a group rate for birthdays, proms, anniversaries and any other special occasion.
Reserve your gondola boat ride by calling (816) 365-7101
And if you would like information about the carriage rides you can call 816-531-1999or go to this website: http://Search ambianceonthewater@yahoo.com
What a great idea !!

Beautiful photos, ladyjane. Just learned from you that one of my favorite restaurants, Brio, is also located in the beautiful Country Club Plaza. Now I will have to visit.
Hi, this was lovely, I would love to visit it, there are so many great things there, I loved the photos, another great hub, rated up cheers nell
Wow! This was such an informative read. For the first time in my life, I have the overwhelming desire to visit Kansas City!
This was a terrific guide to the Plaza. I live about an hour away in Lawrence, Kansas and I have gone there many times. In fact, I hope to get up there in a few weeks to see the Arts Fair--I haven't made it for about three years, and I miss it.
Among the other fine restaurants in the Plaza is a Houston's Restaurant (for steaks), the Melting Pot (for fondue), and a California Pizza Kitchen. There are also many other wonderful restaurants that offer outdoor seating.
The Plaza lights during the holiday season absolutely must be seen. The streets are packed Thanksgiving weekend, waiting for the moment they are lit for the first time every year. It is festive and beautiful.
The shopping is magnificent and, as you said, there is something for everyone. The Barnes and Noble Bookstore happens to be a four-story building.
This was a great hub, and now I can't wait to go back to the Plaza!!!!! Thank you for your wonderful tribute to a great place to visit in the Midwest. Take care.
Mike
This is a great vacation. America has so many wonderful things. We don't have to travel far.
I had no idea Missouri had such finery! I've been to St. Louis, though, and it was rather grand. My most experience is with Branson, which is a fun place - sort of a countrified Vegas - but this Plaza is truly lovely and the shops look quite special! Your illustrations are certainly - illustrative!! Seems to have some of everything delightful!! I'm agreeing with Mickey - no need to travel all that far or get a passport to have lovely places to visit right her in the good ole US of A!
Thanks for a great presentation, LJ!!
This is such a great hub, and about such a cool place, too! The photos are great, and it's wonderful how you've shared not only some personal thoughts on the place, but also information on shops, restaurants, events, features, and services available there. I really want to go on a carriage ride there- those carriages look like Cinderella's pumpkin!!
A completely gorgeous hub, filled with lovely photographs that make me want to get on the next plane to MO! Congrats on your well-deserved win.

what memories you bring back! I used to live in Columbia MO a number of years ago and we had to travel throughout the state for our work. I loved going to KC because I would always make time for a trip to the plaza. It's stunningly beautiful during the Christmas season. A super hub!! congrats on your win. :]
Wonderful pictures! makes you feel like you are really there. I can't say that I have ever been to Missouri but you have really made me want to go.
